Description:   This dataset is produced for the Government of Alberta and is available to the general public. Please consult the Distribution Information of this metadata for the appropriate contact to acquire this dataset. The Central Parkland Vegetation Inventory (CPVI) Polygons is a dataset that was created to capture vegetation information for the Central (Aspen) Parkland Natural Subregion in Alberta. The Parkland Natural Region covers approximately 10% of the province and acts as a broad transitional area between the dry grasslands and the moist boreal forest. This region is characterized by productive soils, moisture levels and climatic conditions conducive to agriculture. The vegetation cover is a mosaic of aspen woodlands, wetlands, fescue grassland and riparian areas. The Central Parkland Natural Subregion is located in east-central Alberta. Other parkland subregions are located in the Foothills and the Peace River areas. The Central Parkland Vegetation Inventory (CPVI) Polygons is designed to be a vegetation / land use database for the Central Parkland Natural Subregion. The extent of the Central Parkland Natural Subregion was described by Strong and Thompson in The Ecodistricts of Alberta, 1995. This database is intended to be utilized by all agencies involved in land management. In order to achieve this goal, the native vegetation within the Central Parkland Natural Subregion has been delineated on the basis of cover class using Landsat Thematic Mapper 7 imagery and 1:30 000 scale aerial photography. Coniferous and deciduous trees have also been separated. The land cover polygons have been classified as water, wetland, island, deciduous trees, coniferous trees, deciduous trees in a native vegetation area, coniferous trees in a native vegetation area, deciduous trees in a recurring lake or potential basin and grassland occurring in a native vegetation area. During the process of generating native vegetation information, updates to the double line hydrography were performed using Indian Remote Sensing imagery. Ownership information (crown, military reserve, freehold, Indian reserve, mixed, other and water) was obtained and incorporated into the final GIS database. There were six datasets that were utilized in the creation of the final dataset: 1. A dataset containing polygons showing interpreted native "GRASSLAND" or "FOREST" areas. 2. A dataset to update access hydrography (capture of basins). 3. A dataset for small open water hydrography. 4. A dataset to classify treed areas into deciduous and coniferous categories. 5. A dataset containing land ownership to the quarter section level. 6. A dataset containing Counties and Municipal Districts. The Central Parkland Vegetation Inventory (CPVI) Polygons data, index map and associated documents are available from Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development, Government of Alberta.
